We next tried omitting the notch in the back of the bale and just sledge-hammering the bale around the rail to try and save some time making the bales.  The problem with the notch was that it involved restringing the bales a couple of times before we could saw out the notch.  This worked almost as well as the bales with the notch, however it still involved a lot of sledge hammering and took ages to do each bale!
