First task of the day was finishing off setting out the grid.  Strings marked out the grid at ground level (at the top in the picture).  Then we needed to plumb down from the intersections on the string grid to give us the corresponding points in the excavated hole.


The chalk is so hard, 3/8 timber posts split while we were trying to bang them into it!
